Jerome “Jerry” Simas<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Jerome Simas joined the San Francisco Symphony as bass clarinetist in 2012. He has performed with the Cleveland Orchestra, San Francisco Opera, Sun Valley Summer Symphony, Chautauqua Symphony, and Naples Philharmonic of Florida. He was a fellow at the New World Symphony in Miami Beach, FL and has held principal clarinet positions with the California Symphony, Oakland Symphony, and IRIS Orchestra. As a chamber musician, he preforms with the Sierra Chamber Society in Walnut Creek, and as a solo clarinetist with the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble in San Francisco. He won Grand Prize at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, First Prize at the International Clarinet Association\u2019s Young Artist Competition and was a participant at the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont. As a music educator, he is a member of the collegiate faculty at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and has taught master classes in the US, Canada, and China. He is currently a coach with the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra, a mentor and coach with various Bay Area community ensembles and serves on the board of the Amateur Music Network. He previously taught clarinet at the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance, Stanford University, UC Davis, and the University of Akron. He received his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music as a student of Cleveland Orchestra principal clarinet, Franklin Cohen.<\/p>\n

Jerry has been mentoring Clarinet Fusion since 2013 and performed a concert with Clarinet Fusion in 2019.<\/p>\n

John Maltester<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

John Maltester is the Director Emeritus of Bands at Los Medanos College and the Contra Costa Chamber Orchestra. He is active as a guest conductor and rehearsal clinician and is the Past-President for the Western Division of the College Band Directors National Association, CMEA Bay Section, and the International Association of Jazz Educators Western Division President. He is in the California Association of Jazz Educators\u2019 Hall of Fame, published two method books, and is also published in The Instrumentalist. He is on the faculty of Diablo Valley College and resides in Pleasant Hill, CA.<\/span><\/p>\n

John has been a mentor of Clarinet Fusion since 2013. He was instrumental, coaching and conducting us during the pandemic from Summer 2020 to Summer 2021; when we were rehearsing and performing outside socially distanced.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Lawrence E. Anderson<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\"Mentor:<\/a><\/p>\n

Dr. Lawrence E. Anderson was instrumental in the launching of Clarinet Fusion as a clarinet choir beginning in May 2012.\u00a0It was at this time that Clarinet Fusion reformatted and doubled in size from a 5 person quintet to a 10 person clarinet choir.\u00a0Dr. Anderson assumed the role of conductor and brought with him much knowledge on musicality and interpretation, as well as music history.\u00a0 He gladly shared his wealth of knowledge with the group at rehearsals on a weekly basis. Dr. Anderson served as conductor of Clarinet Fusion for two full seasons.\u00a0During this time Dr. Anderson enabled the musicians of Clarinet Fusion to reach new performance levels; becoming more integrated and cohesive allowing them to move along the path of now performing without a conductor.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Lawrence E. Anderson, is the Director of Bands and Supervisor of Teacher Education in Music, Emeritus, University of California, Davis, and is a native of Lafayette, CA. He is a graduate of Acalanes High School where he was an active band member and served as Drum Major his senior year.\u00a0He attended the University of California, Berkeley where he was a member of the California Marching Band and the University Concert Band. His senior year he was elected Student Director of the Marching Band.\u00a0He also directed the Cal Alumni Band for several years.\u00a0He currently writes a monthly column, “Notes On Key”, for Alive Magazine.\u00a0Dr. Anderson is the founder of the Danville Community Band, for which he holds the title of\u00a0Founding Director\u00a0and Artistic Director, and participates in as a clarinetist.<\/p>\n

Harvey Benstein<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\"Mentor:<\/a>Harvey Benstein is in his seventeenth year as Music Director and Conductor of The Walnut Creek Concert Band.\u00a0Five members of Clarinet Fusion have played under Harvey\u2019s baton in the band for quite some time.\u00a0Harvey has worked with Clarinet Fusion in preparation for several\u00a0of their events and he was a guest conductor for one of their performances. Harvey\u00a0is invested in Clarinet Fusion\u2019s growth and success and has pushed them to new levels.<\/p>\n

Harvey has been the Music Director and Conductor of the Contra Costa Chamber Orchestra. His teaching career spans over 40 years, teaching on the faculties of Ohio State University (OH), McNeese State University (LA), and Butler University (IN). His secondary school teaching experience began in his home state of Michigan and culminated at Campolindo High School in Moraga, CA.\u00a0He is in demand as a guest conductor and clinician throughout the United States, working with professional, collegiate, amateur, and student ensembles.\u00a0Before pursuing his passion of conducting, as a child growing up Harvey enjoyed playing the clarinet.<\/p>\n

Dr. Robert Calonico<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\"Mentor:<\/a><\/p>\n

Dr. Robert Calonico is Conductor and Musical Director of the Danville Community Band and the Golden Gate Park Band. He has sat in on several rehearsals with Clarinet Fusion and he has been a guest conductor for one of our performances.\u00a0He is\u00a0the Director of Bands, Emeritus for the University of California, Berkeley where his duties included directing and arranging for the Cal Marching Band and conducting the University Wind Ensemble. He is a graduate of St Mary’s College High School in Berkeley and holds a B.A. in music from UC Berkeley.\u00a0He earned his teaching credential and a M.A. in clarinet performance from California State University, Hayward.<\/p>\n

A professional musician since 1972, Robert has performed with the Oakland East Bay Symphony, Oakland Ballet, Berkeley Symphony, Lamplighters, Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, Natalie Cole, Maria Muldaur, Lou Rawls, Wayne Newton, Joan Baez, James Brown among others, and a number of San Francisco based Broadway shows.<\/p>\n

Diane Maltester<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\"Mentor:<\/a><\/p>\n

Diane Maltester–a clarinet instructor for\u00a0St. Mary\u2019s College, California State University East Bay, and Los Medanos College–is also a neighbor of Clarinet Fusion.\u00a0She and her husband John live\u00a0around the corner from the home of Clarinet Fusion\u2019s founder; this\u00a0the location at which\u00a0our weekly rehearsals are held. Diane has provided invaluable guidance to Clarinet Fusion since 2013 and became a full-fledge member in 2020.<\/p>\n

Diane is a professional clarinetist performing in groups to include: the Oakland-East Bay Symphony, the Walnut Creek Festival Opera, the Vallejo Symphony, and the Fremont Symphony Orchestra. She is presently the co-conductor of the Diablo Wind Symphony, a Bay Area honor band. She enjoys teaching and coaching\u00a0and is a former Northern Woodwind Chairperson for the Music Teachers\u2019 Association of California. She received her Master\u2019s degree in music performance from California State University at Hayward.<\/p>\n

San Francisco Symphony Community of Music Makers<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\"SFS<\/a><\/p>\n

Clarinet Fusion has had the honor of being selected for San Francisco Symphony\u2019s Community of Music Makers Chamber Music Workshop for\u00a0four consecutive years, 2013-2016. The opportunity to work directly with members of the symphony, especially Lolly Lewis and Jerry Simas, has been invaluable to the growth of Clarinet Fusion.<\/span><\/p>\n

Community of Music Makers was a program created expressly for adult amateur musicians who want to engage in the joys of making music with others, whether playing an instrument in a chamber group or orchestra or singing in a chorus.\u00a0Workshops and events took place in Davies Symphony Hall, where community musicians could improve their skills and were mentored by San Francisco Symphony players and artistic staff. Symphony Musicians provided coaching for each group, and then all groups convened on the Davies Symphony Hall Stage to perform a short selection for other workshop members and guests.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. H<\/strong>arold E. Wright <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\"2011HalBDcrop2\"<\/a>Originally Clarinet Fusion was formed as a quartet, but they were soon joined by their first mentor, Dr. Harold E. Wright.\u00a0Known affectionately as \u201cHal\u201d he coached the group as they began performing as a quintet. When Hal joined the ensemble he was 93 years young and he began inspiring members to feel the magic of the music.\u00a0His background as a concert pianist, touring clarinetist and musical educator proved invaluable to the group.\u00a0Clarinet Fusion grew tremendously under Hal\u2019s tutelage.\u00a0A fellow musician once said \u201cWhen playing with Hal you felt the youth, energy and excitement of a much younger person.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harold (Hal) Wright earned his undergraduate degree in Music at Fredonia State College in New York, after which he “played” his way through Europe in 1937 and returned to the U.S. to teach.\u00a0He first began teaching jazz to middle school age students \u2013 for which they toured and played in Canada in 1940. In 1942, Hal earned a Masters Degree in Music from Columbia University in New York.\u00a0He also joined the Marines in 1942 serving in the 5th<\/sup> Marine Division during World War II.\u00a0Hal played solo clarinet as part of the U.S. Marine Band.\u00a0After his tour of duty ended, Hal returned to Columbia University where he earned his Doctorate in Music in 1955. Wright made teaching and performing his career, moving on to teach and then head the Music Department at Northern Michigan University, a post that he held for many years.\u00a0Dr. Wright received a second Doctoral Degree in 1993 from NMU.<\/p>\n

At the age of 95 Hal moved to Elk Grove, CA\u00a0to be closer to his family.\u00a0He continued to play his grand piano and joined the Elk Grove Community Band as a clarinetist.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
